Power is also relevant and the new engine develops 560PS, up by 40PS, while torque is up to 540Nm. The engine is ten kilos heavier though the new gearbox and a revised 4WD system shaves weight which makes the LP560 20kg lighter than the stripped out Superleggera and thus boasting a similar power to weight 397PS/ton. This is also the highest revving direct injection petrol engine in the world, the rev limiter cutting in at 8000rpm and at those revs the engine note really does shatter your eardrums, a proper supercar howl. This is Italy and they love supercars everywhere. And the LP560 is nothing if not noisy. A bit hard too.Hard not as in the Lambos of yore which needed body strength to shift gears and work the steering, immense leg muscles for the clutch and an ape like long armed short legged body structure to fit in. The Gallardo is civilised.

Audi seems set on chasing Mercedes with more and more niche models and has followed up the Lamborghini V10 engined S8 with the S6, a similarly equipped hot rod based on the steel bodied A6 saloon. The 5.2 litre engine has slightly less power in the smaller car 420bhp compared with 450. Roadjet would seem an appropriate name for one of these super high performance saloons but has actually been applied to a smaller, taller and less powerful concept car, which sits between the A4 and A6. This is part hatchback and part estate wagon as well as 3.2 litre V6 engine developing 300 bhp and a seven speed DSG gearbox, has such indispensable features as a built in expresso coffee machine. Audi may produce something like this but is tight lipped about whether it will be designated A5 or be known as the A4 Liftback or some such. Audi and Lamborghini will be in the race.
